“Role of Disruptive Technologies in the Maritime Domain”

The “Role of Disruptive Technologies (AI, Cyber Security, UAVs, IoT …) in the Maritime Domain”, was the title of the Seminar held on 9th September 2018 at the Central Park Hotel, Pune.

Vice Admiral Karambir Singh PVSM, AVSM, ADC, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Naval Command was the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker. He set the ball rolling with his incisive analysis and clear thinking on the subject, which cleared the way for some very interesting and insightful presentations and discussions on the various subjects. Rear Admiral G Vishwanathan spoke on the dangers that accompany the use of modern technology on board, and impressed upon the need to address Cyber Security very seriously. This was followed by Cmde GS Jawanda, who spoke about AI and Big Data Analytics, and how this would be progressively used in all spheres of Maritime Activity. Arun Ramchandani and Koustubh Phalnikar of L&T made an interesting presentation about the use of UAVs – Aerial, Surface and Sub-surface in the Maritime Arena. The Session was Moderated by Prof Amitabh Mallik, also known as the founder of Laser Technology in India.

The post-lunch session was moderated by Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan (Retd.), The Director of National Maritime Foundation (NMF). Aniruddha “Anil” Gupte spoke on the role of IoT on the Maritime Domain, tracing the history of IoT to its possible applications in all facets of Maritime verticals. This was followed by Mr. Joy Basu of Amplify Mindware, speakig about ‘Smart Ships’ and BlockChain Technology. His presentation included a live demonstration of how a ship could be monitored by the Head Office in all its activities – position, speed, engine health, navigational accuracy etc. Finally Cdr Nitin Agarwala of NMF spoke on the necessity to have a policy framework to regulate and keep up with all these technologies.
